Programming

In 2015, Johalla Projects assisted in the opening of the Chicago Athletic Association hotel and initiated their creative programming. After the hotel’s successful opening, Johalla spent the next three years consulting and expanding the creative arm of their mission. We actively sought out using unconventional spaces to curate contemporary art throughout the hotel. This included assisting in curating CAA’s Milk Room glass case exhibitions with contemporary Chicago artists and historic artists, such as Henry Kupjack’s miniature rooms. Johalla created pathways between CAA and many different cultural partners including; The Field Museum, The Humanities Festival, Pitchfork and others that resulted in exhibitions, pop-up installations, and public events.

Between late 2017 through 2018, Johalla Projects partnered with Victoria Press and the Chicago Athletic Association hotel to present Art Shoppe, a temporary pop-up art and art-book shop located in the hotel's lobby.

In 2017, Johalla Projects also ushered in the first annual Chicago Art Book Fair, hosted by CAA. Continuing for three consecutive years, the fair showcased over 150 independent publishers and placed the city of Chicago as a global center for print and publishing.
