Aimee Beaubien
Twist-flip-tremble-trace

April 17, 2015 — May 31, 2015

Johalla Projects is very excited to present Twist-flip-tremble-trace, an exhibition of new work by Chicago artist Aimée Beaubien. In her first Chicago solo presentation since 2010, Beaubien moves in a bold new direction with her inclusion of assemblage sculptures and recent two-dimensional collages. The exhibition will run from April 17 to May 17, 2015. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 17 from 7-10pm.

Aimée Beaubien’s work is consistently photographic in its barest form. In Twist-flip-tremble-trace, Beaubien reconsiders her personal snapshots with a constructive vigor, choosing to carve, disassociate, and collage her content to forms that teeter between physical familiarity and intuitive gesture. These cut-up and recontextualized source photographs, which include scenes from her day-to-day to travel images to rephotographed artworks, take shape in playful three-dimensional structures that then absorb and fuse with Beaubien’s found domestic objects. In tandem, the delicate collage objects weave and dangle with and from the stacked furniture -- an unsure foundation.

It is in this constant state of unevenness and uncertainty -- in terms of both optical effect and layered physicality -- that Beaubien’s works become increasingly rich and complex. The viewer is cheerfully tasked with solving her amalgamation of perceptive tests and is encouraged to visually sort through constructions that are mutually organic and representative. In this sense, with this discordant array of objects, Beaubien excitingly upends classical considerations of sculpture and focuses instead on the true flexibility of her medium.
